8 Questions to Shape Impactful Content

Posts are going out. Reports are being published. Campaigns are running. Content is constantly being created. But in crowded communication spaces, visibility alone isn’t enough. Too often, organisations jump straight into producing content without asking a few strategic questions first. The result? Communication that feels busy, but falls short of truly connecting.

Before creating your next post, campaign, report or video, here are eight questions worth asking to help your communication and content connect, resonate and drive impact.

1. What is your purpose ?

Be clear about what are you aiming to achieve. Attempting too many things at once can weaken communications.
→ Is the main purpose of your content to:

  • raise awareness
  • influence understanding
  • mobilise participation
  • strengthen visibility
  • demonstrate impact

Select 1 or 2 priorities to focus content on.

2. Who exactly are you trying to reach?

Avoid attempting to communicate with “everyone.” Being clear about your main audience helps shape relevant content that connects.
→ Take time to define:

  • your priority audience
  • what matters to them
  • what they already know or misunderstand
  • how they engage with information

Ground information in people’s experiences and real-life relevance.

3. Why should they care?

Connect your message to what matters to people. People engage with communication that feels relevant, human and relatable. |
→ Think about:

  • why does this matter now?
  • what human story sits underneath the issue?
  • what emotion or concern does it tap into?
  • how does this relate to everyday life?

Ground information in people’s experiences and real-life relevance.

4. What is your core message?

If communication feels overloaded or confusing, the message probably is too.
→ Strong messaging is:

  • clear and focused
  • easy to understand
  • aligned to purpose and action

Summarise your message in one or two simple sentences. If it’s difficult to explain clearly, simplify it further.

5. What kind of content will actually work?

Different audiences engage with different kinds of content.
→ Strong communication often:

  • tells human-centred stories
  • simplifies complex ideas
  • uses clear visuals
  • includes relatable examples
  • encourages action

Don’t just share information. Make it human, relevant and memorable.

6. Where should this content live?

You do not need to be everywhere. Strong communication is about choosing the right platforms for your content – not trying to manage all of them.
→ Focus on:

  • where your audience already is
  • what formats work best there
  • what your team can realistically sustain

Focus on doing fewer platforms better.

7. How will you stay consistent?

Consistency builds visibility, recognition and trust over time. This does not mean constantly creating new content – it means putting realistic systems and habits in place.
→ Consider:

  • a simple content planner
  • regular communication rhythms
  • key moments and opportunities
  • ways to reuse and adapt strong content

Repurpose strong content instead of always starting from scratch.

8. How will you know if it’s working?

Communication is not just about the number of outputs. Instead of tracking how much content was produced, think back to your purpose.
→ What’s important and how will you track:

  • who engaged
  • what conversations emerged
  • whether understanding shifted
  • whether people took action
  • what content resonated most

Use audience insights and engagement patterns to improve future communication — not just report numbers.

Less noise. More clarity, relevance and connection.

Strong communication is not about constantly producing more content. It’s about being clearer, more intentional and more connected to the people you want to reach.

Taking time to ask these questions before creating content can help strengthen communication, improve engagement and make better use of limited time, energy and resources.
